Live Jazz in the Wisconsin Fox Valley
John Pfeiffer – Solo Guitar – Currently playing Wednesday evenings on College Avenue in downtown Appleton at Spat’s on the “Spatio”. Recently, my engineering work has taken to the road, so I have been working steady local solo bookings around my field engineering work. My focus recently has been on learning and recording new solo guitar arrangements. To this end, I have recorded arrangements developed by other musicians, as well working up some personal arrangements. I occasionally use a drum machine or prerecorded backing tracks. This is an off and on thing; it fills in sound but limits artistic expression because the original performance is “frozen in time” and limits the spontaneity of live musicians’ interaction.
The John Pfeiffer Duo/Trio – Many customers prefer a duo of guitar and bass, or another solo instrument. An advantage of this is also to share in singing. Recently, I have worked Bill Ott, Roger Teske, Jim Faz, Ron Hull, and others on bass, keyboards, and vocals. In this setting, I can provide jazz swing, ballads and Latin jazz, featuring myself on guitar and Many term this music as mainstream jazz, drawn from the “Great American Songbook” of the last century to the present. I am are very much tuned into setting the mood, playing requests, and not over-powering volume.
The Tom Powell and John Pfeiffer Duo was booked regularly at The Seasons Restaurant up to the restaurant closing in 2011. We were awarded the Post-Crescent “Golden Fork Award” for best music while dining in 2006 and 2007. Tom alternates playing on trombone and fretless bass, and vocals as appropriate for the atmosphere. We have played in living rooms or “out on the patio” and we play your requests. We will also “kick it up” with an entire songbook of country, rock, blues, and oldies, with Tom also playing acoustic and electric guitars and featuring our duo harmonies.
Other players that regularly play in with the duo (thus making it a trio) are Bill Ott and Roger Teske, both bassists that are also available for trio work. Bill also plays piano. Roger is an accomplished singer and leader of the band “Easy Pieces”. Other players include Jim Faz on piano and vocals, Frank Nelsen on bass and vocals, and Joe Maas on drums.
The John Pfeiffer Band – A larger ensemble is called upon for performances and special events. In these instances the band line-up varies and will include: drums, keyboards or piano, additional horns, and featured singers. The event or performance drives the make-up of the band and also the music selection, many times selected specifically for the event.
Oldies, Blues, Country Rock, and Variety – For good times music, I continue to play with other bands on request, featuring a mixture of styles and songs based on the musicians involved. Some of this music is Jam-band based selections, or just songs we all know. We typically have a long song list and we play requests (including band requests). Don’t forget to visit “Other Bands” under the “My Music” menu, featuring TrainWreck (the band) and others.
Every year presents another mixture of bookings of duos, trios, and larger group performances. I have been fortunate to able to play regularly and with accomplished musicians. If you are having a dinner party or have a music need for a special event or fund-raiser, please call me to provide memorable solutions for your needs.
